Star Rating for Schools

We all want a 5-star journey to school for our kids. The award-winning Star Rating for School (SR4S) application is the first evidence-based tool for measuring, managing and communicating the risk children are exposed to on their journey to school. It supports quick interventions that save lives and prevent serious injuries from day one. SR4S combines a central web application and a data collection Android app that harness the power of the iRAP Star Rating for Pedestrians. SR4S is helping to save kids lives in India by,

  • objectively measuring the road design Star Rating for pedestrians on the journey to school
  • providing powerful information to inform investment in safety treatments around schools
  • measuring the safety for kids before and after implementation of improvements at the school
  • providing an evidence-based measure of safety performance
  • supporting education campaigns for students, drivers, and the community for safe travel around a school
  • guiding decision makers in prioritizing interventions around a school

Following the ‘Alliance Advocates Training of Asia Region’ organized by Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety,
NGOs such as TRAX  and Avoid Accident  are making use of the SR4S app extensively for school zone safety assessments. School localities in Delhi NCR area and Chandigarh were assessed with support from IndiaRAP and the NGOs assisted implementation of safety treatments such as pedestrian crossing facilities, speed calming measures, signage etc. to improve the safety of pedestrians (refer Case Study with example images of road improvement).
